Australian Film Posters

Part 2 - Printers & Dealers

Introduction

The following table is a listing of representative samples of movie posters printed in Australia from the introduction of film in 1897. The list aims to identify the various printers involved in the production of daybills, 1 and 3 sheets, lobby cards and related promotional material. Each entry includes the date of the item, the title of the film as indicated on the poster, and physical details of the poster, where known. A link to images is also included where possible. The majority of Australian film posters were printed in the daybill or insert format, usually of size 15 x 40 inches or 13 x 30 inches. Less common were 1 sheets (27 x 40 inches) and 3-sheets (41 x 81 inches). It seems from preliminary research that the main focus of poster production in Australia was, from the 1920s, Sydney, though material was also printed in other capital cities such as Melbourne and Hobart. Certain firms seems to predominate during certain periods, such as W.E. Smith of Sydney during the 1940s and 1950s. Information on this page has been compiled from a variety of sources - specifically eBay entries, the detailed listings of the State Library of Tasmania, and the poster dealer John Reid's Australian Movie Posters website. This page is an evolving resource and comments or additions are welcome. Reference should also be made to Part 1 of this site, namely the listing of posters and materials promoting Australian feature films.
